(If you are outside of Washington State, get there
first ;)
1) Coming from Seattle area or eastern state
Most people use this route because you can make a
reservation on the ferry to guarantee your space, and the sailings
are every 2.5 hours or more frequently year-round.
- Take I-5 North to the Canadian border (Peace Arch crossing).
- In British Columbia, I-5 becomes Highway 99.
- Take Highway 99 to Highway 17 (Exit 28). Drive southwest on
Highway 17 to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal.
Basically, from the border, follow the signs to the
Tsawwassen Ferry, which is very clearly marked (30 minutes driving
time from border to ferry, depending on traffic).
Then take the ferry crossing from Tsawwassen to Duke
Point (Vancouver to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island). Once on Vancouver
Island, follow the directions on our Driving
Directions from within Canada Page.
2) Coming from south of Seattle area
You may follow the directions above or use this alternate
route. With this route you avoid Seattle, and the border crossing
tends to be straightforward (the checkpoint is the ferry terminal).
However, the ferry doesn't sail very frequently so if you miss it
you have a long wait. Also, you can't reserve for this ferry.
- Take I-5 north to Olympia.
- Then take 101 to Port Angeles.
The Coho ferry www.cohoferry.com
crosses to Victoria on Vancouver Island. Once on Vancouver Island,
follow the directions on our Driving Directions
from within Canada Page
For a Friday arrival, we suggest aiming for the 12:45pm
sailing, which would put you at Hornby by 6pm. If you miss this
sailing and catch the 5:15pm, you can still make it to Hornby that
night. If you are arriving any day other than Friday, the latest
sailing that will allow you to get you to Hornby is 12:45pm from
Port Angeles.
